Service Matters
The word acolyte means is derived from the Greek word akolouthos, which means "attendant" or "one who helps". Anyone who serves as an Acolyte is joining the ranks of those who have helped with the worship service since the early Christian church. At St. Paul’s by the Sea, youth are eligible to serve as an Acolyte when they enter the 4th grade and can continue until their graduation from high school. Acolytes are an integral part of the weekly worship service and on occasion their assistance is needed at funerals, weddings and special services. They also decorate the church for Pentecost and host Coffee Hour once a year.
